Easy Funnel Cake Recipe
There are so many ways to make funnel cakes and with so many different ingredients. But, what is the easiest way to make funnel cakes? Is there an easy funnel cake recipe that you can make at home and still get the same results as if you were at the fair or at a festival?
There sure is!
To make this easy funnel cake recipe, you will need the following utensils:
- a large frying pan, although a cast iron skillet is recommended;
- a large mixing bowl;
- and a funnel with a 3/8 inch opening
Now that you have the tools, lets get on to the ingredients.
- 2 1/2 cups of self rising flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/3 cups of whole milk
- 2 eggs, slightly beaten
- Vegetable oil (Crisco)
You will want to combine the flour, sugar, milk and beaten eggs in the mixing bowl until they are smooth. You might have a few little lumps left, that is ok.
CautionSince you are heating oil in the skillet or frying pan, use caution that you don’t overheat it, and never leave it unattended on your stove. This can lead to a kitchen fire or personal injury. Learn more about kitchen fire safety.
Heat 1/4 inch of Crisco oil to 375 in skillet. You will need to add more oil as you go, usually after frying 3 funnel cakes, try to maintain the oil in the skillet at around 1/4 inch.
Take the funnel and cover the opening with your finger, pour 1/4 cup of the batter into the funnel.
Hold the funnel over the skillet, remove your finger from the end of the funnel to release the batter into the hot oil. Move the funnel in a circular motion as the batter is coming out. Slightly over lap some of the edges, forming a spiral shape. You can even make patterns and animal shapes or things your kids will like if you are artistically inclined!
Only do one at a time, fry each funnel cake for 1 minute or until edges are golden brown. Flip funnel cake over with a fork and fry the other side until golden brown, which is around another minute or so. Just watch for the color change to golden brown, not a dark brown which would indicate it is burning.
Remove the funnel cake from the oil, drain it on a paper towel and repeat the process with remaining batter.
Serve as is, sprinkle with powdered sugar, cinnamon, or top with strawberries and whip cream. Funnel cakes make a good snack or a quick breakfast.
