There are so many ways to make funnel cakes and with so many different ingredients. But, what is the easiest way to make funnel cakes? Is there an easy funnel cake recipe that you can make at home and still get the same results as if you were at the fair or at a festival?

There sure is!

To make this easy funnel cake recipe, you will need the following utensils:

a large frying pan, although a cast iron skillet is recommended;

a large mixing bowl;

and a funnel with a 3/8 inch opening

Now that you have the tools, lets get on to the ingredients.

2 1/2 cups of self rising flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 1/3 cups of whole milk

2 eggs, slightly beaten

Vegetable oil (Crisco)

You will want to combine the flour, sugar, milk and beaten eggs in the mixing bowl until they are smooth. You might have a few little lumps left, that is ok.

CautionSince you are heating oil in the skillet or frying pan, use caution that you don’t overheat it, and never leave it unattended on your stove. This can lead to a kitchen fire or personal injury. Learn more about kitchen fire safety.

Heat 1/4 inch of Crisco oil to 375 in skillet. You will need to add more oil as you go, usually after frying 3 funnel cakes, try to maintain the oil in the skillet at around 1/4 inch.

Take the funnel and cover the opening with your finger, pour 1/4 cup of the batter into the funnel.

Hold the funnel over the skillet, remove your finger from the end of the funnel to release the batter into the hot oil. Move the funnel in a circular motion as the batter is coming out. Slightly over lap some of the edges, forming a spiral shape. You can even make patterns and animal shapes or things your kids will like if you are artistically inclined!

Only do one at a time, fry each funnel cake for 1 minute or until edges are golden brown. Flip funnel cake over with a fork and fry the other side until golden brown, which is around another minute or so. Just watch for the color change to golden brown, not a dark brown which would indicate it is burning.

Remove the funnel cake from the oil, drain it on a paper towel and repeat the process with remaining batter.

Serve as is, sprinkle with powdered sugar, cinnamon, or top with strawberries and whip cream. Funnel cakes make a good snack or a quick breakfast.

Have you ever made funnel cakes at home? Have a recipe you would like to share?

This is another great basic recipe for funnel cakes that is worth the time to make. These are probably the closest that I have had that remind me of the county fair style funnel cakes. Remember, watch out for the hot oil, keep little ones away from the stove and enjoy!

Ingredients:

3 cups vegetable oil

4 cups flour

1/3 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 1/2 cups milk

3 large eggs

Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting

Step by Step Directions:

In a deep medium skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat until it registers 350º to 375º on a deep-fat thermometer.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder and salt. Make a well in the center and add the milk and eggs; whisk until smooth.

Transfer the batter to a gallon-size resealable plastic bag, remove the excess air and seal the top. With scissors, snip off a corner to make a 1/4-inch-wide hole. Carefully squeeze about 1 cup batter (one-eighth of the mixture) back and forth into the oil, making a free-form lacy web. Cook until golden on the bottom, about 2 minutes. Using tongs, turn the cake over and cook until golden on the other side, about 1 minute more.

Transfer the funnel cake to paper towels to drain briefly. Repeat with the remaining batter.

Dust the funnel cakes with confectioners’ sugar and serve hot.

Mess Saving Tip: To avoid messy spills between frying each batch, set the bag of batter, slit side up, in a bowl next to the stovetop.

Ingredients:

1 cup water

3/4 stick butter (6 tablespoons)

1 tablespoon sugar

1/8 teaspoon salt

1 cup flour

1 cup eggs, about 4 large eggs and 2 whites

Vegetable oil, for frying

Powdered sugar, for topping

Directions:

You will want to start off by boiling the water, butter, sugar, and salt together in a saucepan.

Next, add the flour and work it in until it is all incorporated and dough forms a ball.

Transfer mixture to the bowl of a standing mixer and let cool for 3 to 4 minutes. With mixer lowest speed, add eggs, 1 at a time, making sure the first egg is completely incorporated before continuing.

Once all eggs have been added and mixture is smooth, put dough in a piping bag fitted with a number 12 tip.

Heat about 1 1/2 inches of oil in a heavy pan.

Pipe dough into oil, making a free-form lattice pattern; cook until browned, flipping once.

Remove cake from oil, drain on paper towels, and top with powdered sugar.

Continue until all of the batter is used and enjoy!
